JPL Summer Faculty Research Program

The JPL Summer Faculty Research Program provides opportunities for science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) faculty to engage in research of mutual interest to the faculty member and a JPL researcher. Non-STEM faculty will be considered based on available opportunities.
The primary goals of the program are:
- Cultivate research collaborations between NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the academic community that will contribute to JPL's research objectives.
- Provide opportunities for college and university faculty to experience the methods and content of the JPL/NASA culture so they will be able to give more informed advice and information to their students.
To be eligible to participate in the program, a potential fellow must hold a full time appointment at an accredited university or college in the US. Special requirements for foreign national faculty members may apply. Applications must include CV and a statement of research interests. Fellows are required to submit a research report and present their work at the end of the session.
JSRFP awards $12,000 fellowships for the 10-week session. A housing allowance and limited travel reimbursement for awardees who live beyond a 50-mile radius of JPL will be offered. Please note that stipend payments or salaries from other federal funding sources, including research grants and contracts, may not be accepted during the ten-week tenure of a JPL faculty research appointment.
If a JSFRP fellow's point of origin (home or resident school) is outside of a 50-mile radius of the JPL vicinity, upon arrival he/she is eligible for reimbursement of a maximum of five (5) days of per diem (per diem as defined by the U. S. General Service Administration) for the Pasadena/Los Angeles area:

If the JSFRP fellow chooses to drive to JPL, JPL will reimburse her/him for a maximum amount equivalent to the value of the lowest non-refundable fare on a US carrier plus ground transportation from Los Angeles International Airport to the Pasadena area. Lodging and airfare reimbursements are based on actual expenses and original receipts.
These travel reimbursement rules do not apply to faculty applying for the Career Technical Education Community Collaborative (CTE CC) Grant. For more information on eligibility and stipend, please contact the CTE CC grant director at your institution.
Fellowship time frame: June 1 - August 7, 2009 (option 1)
June 15 - August 21, 2009 (option 2)
